Windlab is disappointed to note that Xstrata Copper has indicated it wishes to build a new stand-alone power station in Mt Isa rather than procure energy from the national grid. “This makes the business case for the CopperString power line connecting Mt Isa to Townsville more difficult” said Windlab CEO Roger Price. “That in turn will make the connection of Kennedy Wind farm, the Kaiwedera Solar project more challenging, leading to potential significant delay. It will also leave many mineral, coal, gas, geothermal resources and other regional development opportunities in North and Central Queensland stranded.” CopperString and the Hughenden Renewable Hub are critical pieces of national infrastructure and Windlab is calling on State and Federal Governments to step in and resolve the situation.
